Beware of those Ready-to-eat emergency meal kits. They are designed to provide fast and easy access to food during short times of crisis. However, many of these meal kits contain high levels of chemicals and preservatives that can leave you feeling tired and low in energy when consumed regularly. Preservatives such as Sodium nitrate have been linked to an increased risk of cancer and can also cause fatigue and low energy levels.
Stovetop cooking
- Bring the water to a boil. You want a three-to-two ratio of water to rolled oats. Bringing the water to a boil before you add the oats keeps them from absorbing too much water.
- Add the oats. Once boiling, drop the temp down to a gentle simmer and add the oats. Simmer for three minutes, stirring occasionally. Then shut off the heat and move the pot off the burner.
- Cover and rest for five minutes. This is where the magic happens: Let the oats absorb the water without stirring or simmering. Perfect oatmeal is just ahead, so get your toppings ready.
Instant pot
- The ratio is 1 cup of oats to 2 cups of liquid.
-
Add rolled oats and water or dairy-free milk to the Instant Pot and stir to prevent sticking. Pressure cook on high for 2 minutes.
- Enjoy immediately with toppings of choice. Store cooled leftovers in the refrigerator up to 5 days or in the freezer up to 1 month.
Microwave
- Measure the oats and liquids. The ratio is 1:2. The usual serving size is ½ cup of oats to 1 cup of water, milk, or a combination of both.
- Place in the microwave without a cover on it. Microwave on high for 2 minutes and the consistency should be perfect.
- Once the timer goes off, allow to naturally release for 10 minutes.
